Chili Cook-Off Rules & Regulations

Chilis

  1. Chili is defined for this contest as any kind of meat, or beans, or combination cooked with chili peppers, various other spices and ingredients.  Both meat and vegetarian chilis are acceptable, but will not be judged separately.

  2. Store bought chili is not allowed and will be cause for disqualification.

  3. Each contestant must sample his/her own chili before the judging begins.

  4. Only Emergency Dispatchers may enter.

  5. Each contestant is required to bring at least 2 gallons of chili (more if possible).  Each entry must be “named” and submitted with the entry form.

  6. The contestant is to prepare the chili and bring it to the event.  There will be no area for preparation at the event.

  7. Each contestant must present the chili in a working crock pot with cover (extension cords will be provided if needed).  Extra chili can be kept in an additional container or second crock pot, if needed.

  8. The contestant is to provide a ladle or serving spoon for their chili.  Any toppings (i.e. cheese, onions etc) can not be a part of the judged recipe.  Toppings will be provided by CAL-EDA.

  9. CAL-EDA will provide all eating utensils and paper products, including those used during the judging.

  10. CAL-EDA will provide side dishes for the dinner portion after the judging is complete.

  11. Judging of the chili will be from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.   You will need to arrive by 3:30 pm to set up.  Contest to be held at (location to be determined.) The categories for the contest include:  “Best All Around”, “CALL the Fire Department!!!”, “Coolest Chili Name”.  (Recipe name may not include any part of the contestant’s name.)

  12. There will be five judges and one alternate judge who will be appointed by the CAL-EDA board prior to the cook-off.

  13. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes will be awarded in each category except “Best All Around” which will have one winner.  The award ceremony will take place at approximately 6:00 pm.

  14. Judging will be done “in the blind”.  Each chili will be assigned a number with the contestant assigned to that number known only to the Chairperson.

  15. In the event of a tie in any category a previously selected alternate judge will cast the final vote.

  16. Participants must submit the entry form to CAL-EDA by October 5th 2010 if they wish to enter.
