Synopsis:

"Dispatcher Cannibalism, or Must We Eat Our Young?" is a class that tries to answer the mystery of  perennially empty chairs in dispatch. Why does it seem to be so hard to get new recruits through training?  Do we, in fact "Eat our Young?"  If so, is that just the way it is?  Is there anything that can be done to improve the "toxic center?" Case histories, spirited discussions on training and retention issues, with usable tools and philosophy to take "home."  It is hoped that you come away from this training invigorated and prouder than ever of your chosen profession, because it is a great career.

Students do not need to bring anything but an open mind!

Instructor:

Joy Willis
Joy WillisCommunications Manager
SHASCOM

Joy began her communications career with Pacific Bell and AT&T in the San Francisco Bay Area. When she moved to Redding, California, a more rural area, Joy took a job as a dispatcher for the Shasta County Sheriff’s Department, became a supervisor there, then was hired as the support and training supervisor for the area’s new consolidated dispatch center, SHASCOM.  She was promoted to SHASCOM Training Manager and Shasta County 9 -1-1 Coordinator, then to Operations Manager, and is currently SHASCOM's Interim Director. Joy is a founding member of Nor-Cal PSD, a dispatcher training organization, served three years on the California Emergency Services Advisory Board, is a tactical dispatcher,  a CLETS trainer and is now on the Public Safety Dispatchers Advisory Council to POST.  She loves to write about dispatching, train dispatchers, speak to citizen groups about dispatch/911 and just plain talk about dispatching.
